Does a complicated sign-up really turn people away from mobile apps?

I downloaded a new game yesterday that looked really promising, but the sign-up process was so convoluted. It asked for so much information upfront, and then had several pages of terms and conditions to click through. I ended up just uninstalling it before I even got to play a minute of the actual game. It made me wonder, does a really complicated sign-up actually turn a lot of people away from mobile apps, or am I just being impatient? Sometimes I feel like developers must know this, but they still make it so hard to get started.

You're definitely not alone in feeling that way! A complicated sign-up can absolutely be a major deterrent. There's a great article https://www.clickfor.net/why-registration-often-decides-whether-a-gaming-app-feels-worth-keeping/ that dives into this, emphasizing how registration functions as the opening scene for a product. It makes it clear that users decide almost instantly whether the process feels manageable, especially on a phone. If the first contact isn't clear enough to continue, people will often just drop off.
