In our December 2024/January 2025 newsletter, we asked our alumni: What is the most memorable historical site you have visited? Read on to see what they said.
David Esan (BA '76) wrote: "There are many but the two that most stand out are the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, which is important to three major religions; and Little Round Top at Gettysburg. If Colonel Chamberlin had not stopped the Confederate advances on that July day, the Union would have been defeated and the US would have split into two countries - or more. The world would have been a very different place."
Fred Holbrook (BA '61) wrote: "Delos, Aegean Sea; home of Delian League of Greek states approx. 500 BC"
Mark Kreib (BA '87) wrote: "I took my family to Hitler's Eagles Nest."
Howard A. Silverman (BA '73) wrote: "What makes a visit to a historic site memorable is the guide's knowledge and skill. What makes it extra special is when the guide was a participant in the events at the site. So, it was a very memorable 2009 visit to Detroit's Motown Museum, home of the studio where so many Motown hits were recorded, when we had the luck of having Martha Reeves ("Dancing in the Streets" and many more) as our guide. Any of the guides could have said 'this room is the office,' but only she could say 'this is the office and over there is where I sat.' It was a unique experience."
Bernard Zimmerman (BA '67) wrote: "Underground Cistern in Istanbul"
