The College of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering has announced that associate professor Pablo Sierra Silva of the Department of History is a recipient of the 2022 Goergen Award for Undergraduate Teaching. The award was established in 1997 by University Trustee and Board Chair Emeritus, Robert Goergen ’60, and his wife, Pamela, and is made for distinction in undergraduate teaching and service among the faculty in Arts, Sciences, and Engineering.
Former chair Laura Smoller submitted Sierra's nomination to ASE in spring 2022. The award was made by a committee comprised of Jeffrey Runner, dean of the College, Gloria Culver, dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, and Wendi Heinzelman, dean of the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
Sierra Silva joined the University in 2013 after earning his bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania and his master’s and doctorate from UCLA. One student commented that Sierra “cares deeply about students and his dedication to excellence inside and outside of the classroom has instilled in me a foundation as a life-long learner.” Another said that “thanks to Sierra’s leadership, I am now a double major in history and computer science with the intention to highlight the history of Afro-Latinos through technology.”
Sierra Silva will be honored at a ceremony scheduled for 4 p.m. on October 27 in Feldman Ballroom in Frederick Douglass Commons.
Previous Goergen Award winners from the Department of History include Tanya Bakhmetyeva (2020), Michael Jarvis (2018), and Richard Kaueper (2012).
